RCEP is not in the best interest of our nation: Congress

“Today, when strengthening the country’s economy should be our goal, it is neither fair nor rational to sign a free trade agreement. It needs to be reconsidered.”

AICC Press Briefing by AK Antony, KC Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala :

  • Today, we would like to talk about an issue concerning all. Our country is heading for a deep economic crisis and slowdown. If affects almost all sectors of the Indian economy- agriculture, employment, industry and trade.
  • Most Indians are finding it difficult to manage their day to day life. This is a time for a responsible Govt, that’s concerned about people’s difficulties. It’s time the Govt concentrates fully on deploying all resources available for a speedy economic revival.
  • Instead of that, Govt’s priorities are wrong. They are not concentrating on addressing the difficulties of the common man. Instead of a speedy solution for economic revival, they are using their time to discuss RCEP agreement.
  • As a party, Congress is always sensitive to the people’s concerns. Congress Party is totally opposed to the RCEP negotiations and agreement.
  • Modi ji is planning to sign on RCEP, which will have a lot of consequences for the Indian economy. India’s trade deficit is $120 billion, if we go ahead with the free trade agreement via RCEP, it will worsen further.
  • Interests of farmers & farm labourers will be adversely affected, autonomy on seed will be a matter of serious concern. Dairy industry will be in danger due to foreign products, fish farming will be adversely affected. Prices of agricultural products will fall.
  • After RCEP, China will directly or indirectly sell their cheap goods in large numbers in India and harm our local industries. Also post this, our export of personnel may not be possible in these countries, because they might put them in sensitive list.
  • Indian National Congress feels that RCEP is not in the best interest of our nation. Today, when strengthening the country’s economy should be our goal, it is neither fair nor rational to sign a free trade agreement. It needs to be reconsidered.
  • This will be the third blow to our economy after demonetisation and hastily implemented GST, when the Prime Minister will sign the RCEP.
